Whitehall Nature Preserve

Now you see me, now you don’t! This is the annual routine at this uncommon upland depressional swamp which is totally surrounded by development. The underlying mafic rock or shale causes ponding water in the fall and winter, yet swamp is dry in the summer.  Seasonal flooding means there are no fish which is a benefit to the rare marbled and spotted salamanders that live here. Throughout the year, staff monitors the salamanders to determine if changes in landscape are affecting the fragile populations.
