Lincoln County, N.C. – Catawba Lands Conservancy recently conserved a 24-acre family farm in Lincoln County, North Carolina. The newly protected property, known as Popple Springs Conservation Easement, joins several other local farms the Conservancy has conserved in the county.
Popple Springs Conservation Easement is a small farm that features an orchard and rolling hayfields, as well as natural hardwood forest that plays a crucial role in maintaining water quality. A small stream runs through the property, connecting to a tributary of Howards Creek, a major tributary of the Catawba River. Conserving this property will protect this vital water resource, contributing to the overall health of the ecosystem.
“Over the past 50 years I’ve seen western Lincoln County change from open pasture land and woodlands to piecemeal subdivisions. We wanted to preserve this land for the wildlife and biodiversity,” shared Jannah Dupre, one of the owners of the property.
The conservation of farms across the Carolina Piedmont by the Conservancy and peer land trusts is crucial to the future of agriculture in North Carolina. As urban development continues to expand, safeguarding these lands is essential for building healthy and resilient food systems and ensuring food security for future generations.
