Oct 23 – Piedmont Savannah Nature Hike at Buffalo Creek Preserve

The Piedmont Savannah ecosystem is a story deeply embedded in North Carolina’s history and ecology. Likely the product of thousands of years of consistent, controlled burning by Native Americans, the Piedmont Savannah is host to many native plants and animals including many native grasses, bird species including the imperiled Grasshopper Sparrow and Northern Shrike, and even locally extinct mammal species such as the American Bison and Grey Wolf. Unfortunately, these Savannah habitats are in decline, and in desperate need of conservation and restoration. The Catawba Lands Conservancy has been working to restore this particular section of Piedmont Savannah within this larger preserve which also includes forest and farm land.  Come out and enjoy the scenery as we discuss the Piedmont Savannah and the interaction of different environments within the Buffalo Creek Preserve.
