What’s at Stake: Andy Kane’s Perspective on Conservation

For Andy Kane, conservation is common sense. As a former staff member of Catawba Lands Conservancy (CLC) and the Carolina Thread Trail (CTT), Andy has spent his life protecting the natural resources that support our way of life. His work with landowners and communities has shaped the landscapes we rely on for recreation, economic growth, and quality of life.

Andy’s conservation journey began with a practical goal: connecting people to the land. In the early days of the Thread Trail, he helped plan routes and engaged local leaders to ensure greenways benefited the environment and the economy. His work extends beyond trails, focusing on grasslands and pollinator projects that support agriculture and protect natural resources.

Today, Andy sees conservation as critical to protecting what matters most. “We’re not just conserving land; we’re protecting property, communities, and the local economy,” he says. With increasing risks from flooding and severe weather, the need for natural defenses has never been more evident. Grasslands, wetlands, and forests are more than scenic landscapes—they reduce flood damage, protect water supplies, and lower infrastructure costs.

Conservation also makes fiscal sense. Healthy ecosystems reduce the need for costly man-made solutions, saving taxpayer dollars. “Every acre we conserve is an investment in resilience, safety, and economic stability,” Andy notes.

His story reminds us that conservation isn’t just about nature—it’s about protecting our homes, businesses, and future. By working together to preserve North Carolina’s natural heritage, we can ensure strong, self-reliant communities for generations to come.
